חֶרֶס

חֶרֶסII m. (b. h.; חרס to glow; cmp. חָרָה) the sun. Men.110a (ref. to Is. 19:18) מאי עיר הח׳ (late eds. הה׳, v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note) what is Ir ha-Ḥeres? קרתא דבית שמשא the city of Beth-Shemesh; מאי משמע דהאי ח׳ לישנאוכ׳ where is the evidence that ḥeres means sun? (Answ. ref. to Job 9:7). Y.Ned.I, 37a top; Y.Naz.I, beg.51a ח׳ לשון גבוה הוא ḥeres (as a substitute for חֵרֶם, v. preced.) has reference to Deity, (as we read) ‘who speaks to the sun (Job l. c.).
